About Me
Pregnancy Help for Older Moms

Almost 12 years separates my two children. When I found out I was pregnant with the youngest, I was stunned. The thought of being pregnant in my 40s terrified me. Being older meant that there was more risk in having a child. I was determined to have a healthy pregnancy and baby. After leaving my OB/GYN's office, I started researching pregnancy tips specifically for older women. During the course of my research, I discovered a lot of older women had questions about being pregnant under these special circumstances. I started this blog to provide pregnancy tips and support to women in their 40s who suddenly find themselves preparing to be a new mom.

Visiting a gynecologist regularly should be part of every woman's healthcare plan. Gynecologists can diagnose and treat various women's health issues, from endometriosis to infertility, and give you sound medical advice. However, there are still many understandings about gynecologists.

Here are a few common myths about seeing a gynecologist that you should know about.

It Is Not Necessary to Schedule an Annual Appointment

Some people only see a gynecologist when they are experiencing a health problem. However, it is recommended to visit a gynecologist every year, even if you feel fine. Some health conditions do not always present obvious signs initially. For example, cervical cancer may not show symptoms right away. If you get regular pap smears, your doctor may be able to detect cervical cancer in the early stages.

I Think My Gynecologist Will Pass Judgment

Unfortunately, some women shy away from seeing a gynecologist because they believe that he or she will judge them. While it may feel uncomfortable to discuss your menstrual cycle or your sex life with a stranger, understand that your gynecologist is a professional. He or she has heard it all before and is not there to pass judgement.

If You're on Your Period, You Should Reschedule Your Gynecological Appointment

Being on your period does not automatically mean that you have to cancel your appointment with your gynecologist. In many cases, you can keep your appointment. For instance, if you are just getting a pap smear, you probably can keep your appointment. Call your gynecologist beforehand to let him or know that you are on your period.

If You Schedule a Gynecological Exam, You Will Get an STD Test

Not every gynecological exam will include STD testing. However, if you have recently had unprotected sex with someone, you may want to ask your gynecologist to screen you for sexual transmitted diseases.

Only Adults Need to See a Gynecologist

It is still frequently assumed that women only need to see a gynecologist after they have reached adulthood. However, a lot of teenage girls can also benefit from seeing a gynecologist. For example, teen girls may have questions about their menstrual cycle or sexually transmitted diseases.

Now you can see that there are many misunderstandings about gynecologists. If it has been more than a year since your last gynecological exam, you may want to schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.
